Trees that lose their leaves in winter, known as deciduous trees, are a great way to provide shade in summer without blocking warm sunshine in winter.
Planted to the north, north-east or north-west, deciduous trees can provide solar passive benefits to the interior of the house (through windows) or to outdoor areas. Sometimes, they can be used in place of expensive pergolas, if you have less money than patience!
We have found the gleditsia to be a fabulous deciduous tree. Tough, reasonably fast growing and beautiful. The best thing is though, it loses it’s leaves quite early in winter – unlike some deciduous trees that wait until they see you shivering in ugg boots before they let the sun through!
